WHO ARE WE?

We are El Congreso de UCSB, a student-led cultural, social, and activist organization located at UC Santa Barbara.

Our goals as a collective are to provide a safe and inclusive space for students free of prejudice, empower marginalized students (both on and off campus) in their endeavors to navigate exclusionary institutions, provide a communal space where folks can find meaningful expression of themselves, provide a space where members can create and foster grassroots social change, and endeavor to create solidarity among all oppressed people through education and direct action. We are the official MEChA chapter at UCSB.
Every year, we host Latine College Day (LCD for short), an empowering outreach conference where we bring middle and high school students onto the UCSB campus for a day of education and empowerment through keynote speakers, entertainment, breakout workshop sessions, and more. We host this conference every Spring Quarter! Providing transportation, food, and direct outreach are included in these efforts to connect students to resources that will aid them in attaining higher education, learning more about their culture and community, and experiencing what it’s like to be on a university campus.

Formerly, the 1st through the 27th conference was named Raza College Day (RCD). The 28th conference (2021) was named Latinx College Day (LCD). The originally planned 28th annual conference for 2020 was cancelled due to COVID-19, the only time the conference has been cancelled in its history. It was rescheduled and took place in April 2021 in a remote format. Starting with the 29th annual conference in 2022, the conference's name is Latine College Day and has returned in an in-person format.

Outside of the conference, some of our past events and collaborations include: Thanks-taking in collaboration with MUJER, taking back the meaning of the Thanksgiving holiday through decolonization perspectives (Fall 2021 and Fall 2019); in response to Mexico’s Paro Nacional, a femicide memorial and vigil for missing and murdered women (March 9, 2020); political education night with a showing of the Las Sandinistas documentary, about the role of women in the conflict in Nicaragua (Spring 2020); student social in collaboration with UCSB SIRRC (Spring 2021), Free Them All Activist Tour as part of the Social Justice Coalition (Spring 2022).

We recently issued demands to the UCSB administration regarding HSI (funding shortcomings, establishment of an HSI Director and HSI Committee with 25% students)
, El Centro Arnulfo Casillas (funding shortcomings, establishment of an El Centro Director, accessibility, green space, future expansion), Comunidad Latinx Graduación (CLG) (funding and ceremony time guarantee), EOP Cultural Resource Centers (CRCs) (establishing individual Coordinators), and Housing (unequivocal rejection of the Munger Hall residence hall, guaranteed housing for first years, second years, and transfers; continuing housing contract process in January; housing committee with 25% students; addressing the university’s failure to properly address the housing crisis that has destroyed the well-being and stability of students). Updates are available on our Statements page.
