The 31st Annual Latine College Day is taking place Saturday, April 20, 2024 from 9 AM - 5 PM!
DETAILED CONFERENCE EVENT DESCRIPTION
OVERVIEW: This is Latine College Day, a one-day outreach event hosted by El Congreso de UCSB that takes place on the UCSB campus, inviting middle school, high school and community college students in the tri-county area (Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and Ventura Counties) to attend. Approximately 250 students will be attending! The conference is free, with El Congreso providing transportation for participating high school groups in Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties! A light breakfast and lunch will also be provided, and participating attendees will receive a t-shirt for their attendance and dedication.
Students spend a day learning about how to pursue higher education, whether that’s attending a four-year university, community college, or other institutions of higher education. In addition, there will be workshops of all types hosted by community members, live music entertainment, speakers, and food! Being present on campus, beyond the usual format of touring a campus that some students have participated in, will allow attendees to immerse themselves in a culture of learning, participation, and discovery through these workshops and activities.
We also invite teachers to attend and learn alongside their students. In addition to chaperoning their groups, teachers also attend these sessions and take the knowledge back to their communities.
ADMISSIONS & FINANCIAL AID PRESENTATIONS: The UCSB Office of Admissions and Office of Financial Aid will provide workshops explaining the nuances of admissions and financial aid, while keeping students engaged with the most updated information - something that is especially important as students navigate applying to institutions of higher education in a post-online learning environment where grading systems may have been different and students faced great challenges in maintaining classroom engagement.
During the admissions presentation, high school seniors will have the option of participating in a student panel with UCSB students from a vast array of backgrounds and interests including ethnic, sexuality, gender identity, citizen status, and major and minor areas of study. Through this panel, the participants are able to enjoy a more comfortable, intimate setting wherein they are exposed to the immensely diverse and highly rewarding university experience.
BREAKOUT WORKSHOP SESSIONS: Twice throughout the day, attendees will break into smaller groups for workshop sessions. Hosted by local community members, attendees will be able to choose workshops of interest to them, which include topics such as alternative pathways to higher education, STEM, emotional resilience, career development, community organizing, cultural fluency, immigration, and other topics relevant to students. Through these workshops, we aim to provide an open space of dialogue, spread awareness, and empower all attendees.
Previous workshop themes include “Unions 101”, “Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu”, “De nuestras raíces a la modernidad”, "Reclamando Nuestras Raíces – Introduction to Gardening” , "Navigating Environmental Spaces at UCSB”, “How to be an Activist”, "Diasporic Poetics: Revolutionary Poetry and Politics”, “Engineering Marshmallow Towers”, “MiSendero: Empowering through Leadership”, and "¡La Fuerza de Nuestra Comunidad! (The strength in our community)”.
SPEAKERS: We invite individuals as esteemed speakers. They share about their lived experience, providing insight into their lives and how they achieved their goals, both educational and personal. The speakers discuss the challenges they faced along the way and how they have overcome those challenges.
ENGAGEMENT: After check-in, attendees start the day at Cheadle Plaza for a ceremonial welcome to start the day-long event. They will enter Campbell Hall for a presentation and keynote speaker. Then, they will head to the breakout workshop sessions, hosted by student organizations, individual students, and community members. Following the workshop sessions, there will be a lunch break where students take the opportunity to eat, relax, and dance to music, enjoying themselves while taking in the beauty of UCSB. After lunch, there is another presentation and an inspirational speaker and presentations, followed by a live music performance and closing remarks.
At the end of the conference, El Congreso members will facilitate Admissions and SIOP evaluations and present the closing remarks.
